The chances are, you’ve never even considered getting a hot stone massage. And why would you? Given the choice between a therapeutic sports massage and a pile of heated rocks… well, it’s a no brainer really.

But before you write off hot stone massage as an ineffectual spa fad, think again. Hot stones have been used in massage for thousands of years, and the technique is believed to have originated in Native American culture. The idea was that by setting hot stones of varying weights across the body, you could maintain pressure on key areas even after you have finished massaging them.

So what’s involved with a Hot Stone Massage?

Today, hot stone massages work with the same principle. Your therapist will massage you as usual, using the heated stones to apply extra pressure to particularly tense areas. The heat helps your muscles to relax, while the weight of the stones bears down on any knots or tight spots, loosening them up so that your massage can work even deeper.

The stones aren’t so hot that they burn you, but you will feel them get to work almost immediately. It’s a strange sensation the first time you do it, but you can’t deny it gets results! Give it a go and find out for yourself what all the fuss is about.
