What is reflexology

No matter how you exercise, there’s a good chance that you are leaning pretty heavily (literally) on feet. They keep you balanced during core training and weight lifting, they do all the hard work during running and cycling, and they help you streamline your physique and power you forward while you swim.

Fitness fanatics are almost obsessive about foot maintenance, scheduling regular massages and appointments with the local podiatrist. But reflexology takes foot care to a whole new level.

Reflexology is based on the ancient Chinese and Egyptian beliefs that different areas of the feet are directly connected to the various organs of the body. They found that by applying pressure to specific areas of the feet (and, to a lesser extent, the hands), they could stimulate vital organs, improving their performance and promoting better health.

Reflexology is still practised today by homeopathic doctors and in many spas. It feels a bit like a regular foot massage that uses no oils and focuses on a few key pressure points. Converts claim to feel a sense of extreme wellness following a reflexology treatment, and good therapists can offer dietary and lifestyle advice that will keep this feeling going on and on.

For sceptics, well, you’re still getting a pretty excellent foot rub that will only complement your existing foot-care regime!
