Keen cyclists are no strangers to injury. Whether you’ve fractured a bone in a fall or suffered from recurring muscle cramps, there is no doubt that cycling is one of the most physically gruelling and injury-prone sports.

A good bike, a professional fitting and the odd swatch of kinesio tape can help prevent prolonged problems, but if you’re serious about cycling, you need to make like the pros and start hitting the spa. When you do, here are the best treatments to use:

Ice bath

If it’s good enough for Chris Hoy, it’s good enough for you. Professional cyclists swear by a post-cycle ice bath, which helps prevent tightening of the muscles and aids recovery. Focus on your quads, glutes and hamstrings and sit in the ice for at least one minute to maximise the benefit.

Sports massage

A good sports massage can be surprisingly painful, but makes the world of difference to over-worked quads. Ask for extra time to be spent on your legs, and don’t be afraid to request more pressure on problem areas. The deeper the massage, the better.

Hand and foot treatments

Point of contact injuries are very common among cyclists. How many times have you finished a cycle with frozen, claw-like hands or blistered feet? In between rides, book regular hand and foot treatments with a qualified therapist who can massage the delicate hand and foot muscles, spot potential alignment issues and treat chafing and blistering. Nail polish optional.
