What is acupuncture

You know what acupuncture is, don’t you? It’s that weird treatment where needles are stabbed all over your body while you lie naked on a bench.

Except there’s a bit more to it than that – well, there would have to be, otherwise we wouldn’t have been doing it for thousands of years.

Acupuncture originated in ancient China, where it was used to treat everything from nausea and muscle pain, to digestion and fertility.

The most dedicated fans will claim that it can cure any ailment and while the jury is out on that one, there is little doubt that the treatment is effective. Particularly when it comes to improving your fitness and wellbeing.

Here’s how acupuncture works:

Tiny needles – and tiny is the operative word here – are applied to specific points across the body, applying intense pressure across a tiny area. Like a deep tissue massage or a hot stone massage, this pressure helps to loosen any tightness in your muscles and tendons, and improve circulation.

It’s most effective when concentrated on one problem area – for instance, a sports injury or a persistent muscle pain. In fact, most professional athletes swear by acupuncture as a natural, drug-free form of therapy.

If you are serious about looking after yourself, it’s worth trying. Just don’t try it at home…
