The Benefits of Yoga

Once upon a time, you could spot a yoga fanatic from miles away. They were the willowy vegans wearing hemp slacks and talking about their life-changing trip to India ten years ago.

Now, yoga fanatics are harder to pin down. That bodybuilder from your gym? He’s probably practising yoga to help build his muscle strength. The professional dancer who never runs out of energy? She’s using yoga to improve her flexibility. The multitasking professional who never seems stressed out? He’ll be using yoga to relax.

There’s no doubt about it – yoga has gone mainstream. In fact, barely a week passes without a new celebrity endorsement: Matthew McConaughey, Robert Downey Jr (AKA Iron Man), and Adam Levine, to name just a few. Meanwhile, Olympic athletes such as Ryan Lochte swear by regular yoga sessions to keep them fit and injury-free.

Yoga is much more than just pulling shapes and stretching. It is all about endurance, flexibility and breathing exercises – three skills that any fitness fanatic absolutely needs.

By incorporating yoga into your workout regime, you can strengthen your core and work out the tiny muscle groups that are harder to reach through weightlifting alone. And the benefits don’t end there. Yoga can help you improve your posture, alleviate joint pain, lose weight, tone up, improve your balance and get a better night’s sleep.

Whether you go the full Russell Brand and make it a lifestyle, or add a few choice stretches to your warm-up and cool-down regime, yoga may well be the key to reaching your fitness goals.
