For the spa lover who’s seen it all… what about an underwater massage?

The Spa

Luxury spas like to offer something different to their clients – an exclusive treatment or sensation that you can’t get elsewhere. But Lime Spa at the Huvafen Fushi resort in the Maldives may take the prize for the most unique ‘once in a lifetime’ spa experience: the underwater treatment room.

There are actually two underwater treatment rooms at Lime Spa, and both offer equally stunning views of the coral reefs and tropical fish in the surrounding Indian Ocean.

If you’d rather stay above sea level, there are another six treatment rooms available at Lime Spa, as well as a SubLIME area that is kitted out with thermal zones, showers, a steam room and a sauna.

The Location

The Huvafen Fushi resort itself is set across a private island by the Kaafu Atoll, just north of the Maldivian capital city of Male. To say that this resort is exclusive does not do it justice.

There are just 44 over-water villas at the resort, all facing out towards the island’s warm-water lagoon that is full of tropical marine life, including stingrays, clownfish, turtles and reef sharks. If you’re lucky, you might even see a few dolphins playing out near the horizon.

The resort and spa are dedicated to sustainability and marine conservation, and there is a resident marine biologist on the staff who is available to take guests on expeditions and tell you the names of all those colourful fish which swam by while you were having your massage.

The Treatments

Most of the spa treatments are inspired by the surrounding marine life, including the ‘Marine Wave’ ritual and the ‘Lonu Veyo’ experience, where you float in a salt water pool that has been enriched with a detoxing concentration of Indian Ocean minerals.

There are dedicated treatments for men (the ‘Man Made’ facial and ‘Sole Man’ hand and foot treatment), as well as a massage for pregnant women (the ‘Scrummy Mummy’), and bespoke offerings for individuals or couples.

For the full island experience, why not try the spa’s signature LIME Light Ritual – this three-hour massage uses a cocktail of local oils and scents including coconut, lime, salt water and sea minerals, before algae-enriched ice cubes are melted across your body.

The Lime Spa takes an already beautiful resort to the next level. Yes, it’s expensive, but you won’t regret a single penny. This is one island you wouldn’t mind being stranded on.
